I recently finished reading a book for my Spanish class entitled
Cajas de cartón: relatos de la vida peregrina de un niño campesino by Francisco Jiménez. This is the first book I have read completely in Spanish, and it was not easy to do so. I spent many hours with my Spanish dictionary, but it was worth it. The story is about a Mexican family that crosses the border illegally in order to have a better life in California. It is told through the voice a young boy named Panchito. The book is a conglomeration of stories that take place throughout his life as he grows and becomes accustomed to life as a agricultural worker, and a student, in America. I absolutely loved this book, and if you speak Spanish then I definitely recommend it. Panchito is a wonderful character, and I learned to care deeply for him as I read his story. He is such a determined worker, and there are so many setbacks that he has to overcome in his life.
Cajas de cartón is a touching book that I would definitely read a second time.
